More on Social Security

If you need to:
- Raise taxes
- Cut promised benefits
- Raise the retirement age
- Lower COLAs (Cost of Living Adjustments)
- Raise the annual wage cap
- Tax social security benefits
just to keep social security in tact, then there is a problem. Social security should be self-sustained. Meaning, we should not have to do all this just to keep it alive. By privatizing social security, for the long term, it will be self-sustained. Yes I agree, there will be a penalty for privatizing social security (at least how I see it today), but it is worth it. And if congress had invested the trust funds instead of spending it, there would not be a problem. They could have liquidated the trust funds and payout the money to the beneficiaries instead of raising taxes, cutting benefits, ect…. This makes a very good point on why privatizing social security is so good. Now, congress can stay out of our pockets and not spend our retirement money.

Why do you suppose some people are so VERY interested in “privatizing” public monies? A-la charter schools, social security, etc. If those in favor of privatizing these things think they can win converts in the free marketplace of ideas, then why does the money need to be collected involuntarily from the taxpayer and delivered by our government into private hands? If you can explain how this is not corporate welfare I would be interested in hearing it.

There are two sides to this. One is the fact that the government needs to collect involuntary money from people to help ensure that they have a retirement account when they get a certain age. This needs to be done such that people will not depend on the government when they retire or get old. This is a given. The second part is what to do with the money? All because the government collects involuntary money for people for their own retirement account does not mean that you cannot privatize it. Therefore, if they collect all of this money from people, it is best to find the best place to put it such that the money collects the best interest and that this program is self-sustained. What is the best way to accomplish both of these concerns? Privatizing the money that is going towards your retirement. I hope this answer your question…

Are you assuming a private corporation could do a better job managing public Social Security funds? It couldn’t do so without accepting more risk, and that is not a wise thing to do with retirement money. Private corporations are run for profit, and nothing else. Do you feel comfortable with a corporation earning money from your Social Security contributions? What happens if the company is run poorly? It’s not terribly interesting work, and profit is limited. How can talented people be attracted to run such a boring company? And where would the company’s profits come from, my paycheck? Privatization will solve nothing. Instead, it would create even more problems. Corporate greed can not be added to this equation. It’s a job only the government can do. Something needs to be done, but privatization is not the answer.
